Metrics details. An evolutionary hypothesis suggested by studies of the genome of the tiger pufferfish Takifugu rubripes has now been confirmed by comparison with the genome of a close relative, the spotted green pufferfish Tetraodon nigroviridis. Ray-finned fish underwent a whole-genome duplication some million years ago that might explain their evolutionary success. In , Sydney Brenner and colleagues [ 1 ] proposed sequencing the pufferfish genome as a cost-effective way to identify and characterize human genes. The genome of the pufferfish is only about one-eighth of the size of that of human but was expected to contain a similar gene repertoire. Ten years later, not only has a draft genome sequence been released for Takifugu rubripes Fugu, also known as the Japanese or tiger pufferfish [ 2 ], but also for Tetraodon nigroviridis green spotted pufferfish [ 3 ], a close relative that diverged from Takifugu million years ago Mya. By comparing the two pufferfish genomes with that of human, several hundred novel human genes have already been uncovered, as was predicted by Brenner and colleagues [ 1 ]. But the pufferfish genome sequencing projects have also yielded a surprising finding: ray-finned fish Actinopterygii , such as pufferfish might have more genes than lobe-finned fish coelacanths and lungfish and land vertebrates, because of additional gene-duplication events [ 4 ]. The recent release of the Tetraodon genome sequence [ 3 ] provides overwhelming evidence that a genome-duplication event did indeed occur early in the evolution of ray-finned fish. Some of the first data pointing to a possible genome duplication in fish came from Hox genes and Hox gene clusters.

Ocean Research Institute, University of Tokyo. Department of Zoology, National Science Museum. We determined the whole mitochondrial genome sequence for spotted green pufferfish, Tetraodon nigroviridis Teleostei: Tetraodontiformes. The genome 16, bp contained 37 genes two ribosomal RNA genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, and 13 protein-coding genes plus control region as found in other vertebrates, with the gene order identical to that of typical vertebrates.

The sequence was used to estimate phylogenetic relationships and divergence times among major lineages of fishes, including representative model organisms in fishes. We employed partitioned Bayesian approaches for these two analyses using two datasets that comprised concatenated amino acid sequences from 12 protein-coding genes excluding the ND6 gene and concatenated nucleotide sequences from the 12 protein-coding genes without 3rd codon positions , 22 transfer RNA genes, and two ribosomal RNA genes.

The resultant trees from the two datasets were well resolved and largely congruent with those from previous studies, with spotted green pufferfish being placed in a reasonable phylogenetic position.

Last Saturday, the Taumafai family on Thursday Island travelled to a local swimming spot after being affected by a local power outage. Mother Tamara Taumafai said it was hot and humid that day so she and her five children decided to go swimming to cool down. Ms Taumafai’s four-year-old daughter Amaraia was playing with three of her brothers, when her mother noticed something amiss in the water.

This includes the scribbed puffer, starry puffer fish, the ferocious puffer, and the milkspot toadfish.

But since , when they were first discovered in Japan, no one could explain these phenomena. Now, the mystery has been solved: pufferfish are the culprits. Males, LiveScience explains , create the structures to attract females. Males laboriously flap their fins as they swim along the seafloor, resulting in disrupted sediment and amazing circular patterns.

Although the fish are only about 12 centimeters 5 inches long, the formations they make measure about 2 meters 7 feet in diameter. First, they involve radially aligned ridges and valleys outside the nest site. Second, the male decorates these ridges with fragments of shells. Third, the male gathers fine sediments to give the resulting formation a distinctive look and coloring, Kawase said. If things go well, however, the female will lay her eggs in the center of the circle, and then, like most fishes, the males will fertilize those eggs externally.

By MailOnline Reporter. A Florida man who ate some pufferfish – a delicacy in Japan – after doing cocaine nearly lost his life over the indulgence. Pufferfish contains a poison that is 1, than cyanide, which ruined the kidneys of year-old man from Aventura, Florida, meaning he will spend the rest of his life on dialysis. He went to the hospital because he couldn’t stop vomiting, was suffering stomach pain, and was struggling to walk or even speak. At first, doctors thought the cocaine in his system might explain his high blood pressure, before they discovered that his grandmother was also in a state after sharing the meal with him – but not the cocaine.

The Florida man, doctors discovered, had made his own situation more prickly by eating the pufferfish’s liver, which is particularly poisonous. His kidneys were so badly damaged that he wound up in the ICU and, although he pulled through, will be kept alive by dialysis for the rest of his life. Pufferfish is a delicacy called fugu in Japan, but it can only be cooked by highly-qualified chefs because people can die if they eat the livers or ovaries stock image.

Doctors at the Aventura Hospital and Medical Center, around 19 miles 31km from Downtown Miami, revealed the unnamed man’s illness in a case study.

Pufferfishes of the Family Tetraodontidae are the most speciose group in the Order Tetraodontiformes and mainly inhabit coastal waters along continents. Although no members of other tetraodontiform families have fully discarded their marine lives, approximately 30 tetraodontid species spend their entire lives in freshwaters in disjunct tropical regions of South America, Central Africa, and Southeast Asia.

To investigate the interrelationships of tetraodontid pufferfishes and thereby elucidate the evolutionary origins of their freshwater habitats, we performed phylogenetic analysis based on whole mitochondrial genome sequences from 50 tetraodontid species and closely related species including 31 newly determined sequences.

Marine fish and shellfish were farmed slightly more recently, dating back 1 (Larimichthys polyactis), grouper and puffer fish are the major fish species cultured.

Extraordinary scenes filmed for new documentary showing the marine mammals in their natural habitats. In extraordinary scenes filmed for a new documentary, young dolphins were seen carefully manipulating a certain kind of puffer fish which, if provoked, releases a nerve toxin. Though large doses of the toxin can be deadly, in small amounts it is known to produce a narcotic effect, and the dolphins appeared to have worked out how to make the fish release just the right amount.

Carefully chewing on the puffer and passing it between one another, the marine mammals then enter what seems to be a trance-like state. The behaviour was captured on camera by the makers of Dolphins: Spy in the Pod, a series produced for BBC One by the award-winning wildlife documentary producer John Downer.

It was the most extraordinary thing to see. The documentary makers used spy cameras hidden in fake turtles, fish and squid to film hours of footage showing dolphins in their natural habitats. It is the latest in a long run of wildlife documentaries made by Downer which use similar spy camera techniques. You can find our Community Guidelines in full here.
